“It All Started with a SOAP Note”
Feat. Casey Christy, DAT, ATC, CSCS
When brothers Casey and Brandon Christy set out to develop an EMR system for athletic trainers, they didn’t know how it would create a much-needed brotherly bond during a difficult time. The year was 2015 and their father was very sick with a neurological disorder.
Casey, a long-time athletic trainer at Eastern High School in Voorhees NJ, and Brandon an experienced web-designer, had talked about developing an EMR system a few years beforehand. “We created some flowcharts and discussed some design ideas, but we both got busy with life and put the project on hold," explains Casey. “Then a few years later, Brandon said ‘let’s do this,’ and we haven’t looked back.”
As brothers, Casey and Brandon have some things in common such as their love of baseball, but nothing in common professionally, until ATGenius.com.
“The blessing of ATGenius was that we were building a business, collaborating on a project together and talking or communicating daily, which was great for our relationship," explains Casey. "This was especially important during a time when we needed to be in each other’s lives more as our father became ill.” Their dad, Kenneth Christy, taught his boys dedication and that enjoying what you do for work is important. He was employed by the NJ American Water Company for 38 years, working his way up from a chemist to Water Quality Control Superintendent. “My dad loved his work, was beloved by his co-workers and I never heard him complain about his job, ever.”
ATGenius.com has grown from a few high schools piloting the system and is now used by hundreds of schools, colleges, clinics, hospitals and professional sports teams across the country. “We joke now that it all started with creating a way to write a SOAP note.”
"As a company, our mission is to provide a means for ATs to easily document and show their value, improve patient care, protect themselves from liability and communicate better with patients, parents and coaches.” says Casey “Our father was too ill to recognize what we were building at the time, but I would like to think he would be proud of what we have accomplished, and most importantly that Brandon and I have combined our experiences and built it together.”
